Message from the Organising Chair

It was two years ago when the first Indonesian Migrant Workers Awards (IMWA) was launched with great success in 2015. IMWA 2015 had 65 nominees with RM302,000of sponsorship money contributed by 19 companies operating in the timber, plantation, constructions & manufacturing industries in Sarawak.

The positive impact of IMWA 2015 benefits all stakeholders namely the workers, the employers, the Sarawak State Government, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia and the community.

Some of the benefits derived from IMWA 2015 are as follows:

  1. The nominated Indonesian workers were inspired, touched and proud by the treatment and attention given by their respective employers and the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia as well as the efforts ofIMWA organising committee member for making the effort to visit the workers at their work places.
  2. The program has uplifted the morale of the workers because they no longer feel that they are just being treated as cheap labour but they now believe that their employers see the potential in them as responsible, discipline and abiding workers who are not only committed to their works but also committed to contribute to social activities.
  3. The program has improved the relationships between the Indonesian workers and their respective employers creating a conducive work environment.

In view of the encouraging outcome as well as the encouragement and support of Bapak Jahar Gultom, the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, the organising committee is determined to organise IMWA 2017.

IMWA 2017 attracted 109 nominees (a 68% increase over IMWA 2015) with sponsorhip money totalling RM447,000.00(a 48% increase over IMWA 2015) which was contributed by 20 companies.

On behalf of the organising committee of IMWA 2017, I would like to thank all the companies and their respective nominees for participating in IMWA 2017. The IMWA 2017 committee members and I also like to thank the Board of Advisors of IMWA 2017 who provided much valuable guidance and input on this program especially to Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia, Bapak Jahar Gultom, for his unwavering wisdom.

Much appreciation to YAB Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, the government of Sarawak and His Excellency RusdiKirana, Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary, for the support given to this program.

May this program continues to bring benefits to all the communities in Sarawak.
